How many metres, and is this dress worth sewing?
Type the sketchbook numbers. You get metres to buy per fabric, the coin cost, and what the order really earns against the Sell dress offer. Saved in your browser.
Fabric metres
shop sells whole metresType the sketchbook's Approx. Xm fabric required and what you own. Pick a fabric name and its shop price per metre fills in (359 fabrics, checked for Build 446).
Order profit
commission vs off-rackThe sketchbook's Reward (called Budget before Build 443) against what the dress costs you.
Opulence and Excess tracker (5,000 gold on one dress)
The achievement counts what you spend on one successful dress, and the game shows no meter. Spend so far on this dress: 410, so 4,590 to go.
Since Build 403 a commission still pays if the character accepts it, even when requirements fail.

What is the fastest way to stop losing coins in Dressmaker?
Most early money problems come from two habits: buying fabric piece by piece and over-decorating. Before you cut, read the sketchbook's Approx. fabric required line, buy that amount plus about 10% in one trip, and reuse leftovers on off-rack dresses. Keep accessories to what the commission tags ask for, because accessories do not raise fabric tags like Flowers. Then compare the commission reward with the cost: if a dress costs more than it pays, pick cheaper cotton or linen in the same colour. Off-rack dresses need no sizing, so they are the quickest way to turn spare metres into coins between story jobs. The calculators above do the arithmetic; the money guide covers the rest.
- Shop sells whole metres; buy once, with a 10% buffer
- Failed but accepted commissions still pay (Build 403)
- Budget was renamed Reward in Build 443
- Off-rack dresses have no size check

Questions players ask
+How much fabric should I buy for a Dressmaker commission?
Read Approx. Xm fabric required in the sketchbook, add about 10% for awkward grain layouts, and round up to whole metres because the shop sells by the metre. The calculator does this per fabric and subtracts what you already own.
+Is it better to complete a commission or sell the dress?
Story progress only moves when you complete commissions, so do that first. When the Sell dress offer beats the reward, the extra coins are nice, but you still need another dress for the commission. The money guide explains when off-rack pays.
+Do I get paid if a commission fails?
Yes, since Build 403 (Sep 22, 2026) a commission still pays if the character accepts it, even with failed requirement bars. A refused dress pays nothing.
+How many achievements does Dressmaker have?
32. The rarest are Sucker for Punishment (4.3%) and Trim and Proper (4.4%). See the achievement list for unlock rates and how to get each one.
+Is Dressmaker on Steam Deck or controller?
Not officially yet. It runs, but there is no proper gamepad support; the developers listed rebinding and gamepad/Steam Deck as the next priorities in the Build 443 notes. Details in controls.
